The Tiboli self-check is tucked away in a 'no frills' area of Bilbao city centre. However, the building has been newly modernised and contains a series of apartments/rooms. The room was clean, with a spartan shower room downstairs and open-plan bed area up the architectural glass-and-metal stairs. Think functional rather than stylish ... decent value for money if you are happy with a room reminiscent of student accommodation. The location is great - a pleasant, easy walk to all main attractions (be ready for a steepish walk to reach the building).
My room was obviously a family room with four single beds in an minimalist, close to brutalist, style that made the most of metal, wood and bright bare lightbulbs. It would be OK for a family but lacked any touches that might make a single occupant feel at home. The metal-framed single bed was very narrow - not the most comfortable. Obviously, the Tiboli was self check-in - the entry code and instructions were sent to me on the day of arrival. Getting in the outer then room door required connecting to a website via mobile. Fine when you get the hang of it, but a bit worrying if you've been out taking photos all day and return with a low battery. Light was through frosted windows into a central building void. No view; poor light.
Given Bilbao is such a delightful, vibrant small city, I will try to find somewhere a little more authentic next time, but Tiboli was reasonable value, clean and did the job. I just wonder why they made (my room at least) quite so spartan.
