We recently stayed at The Machrie in Islay for four nights and had a wonderful time.
The hotel is in a beautiful location, with the beach just a short walk away and lovely views across the golf course and out to sea. The view from the restaurant is particularly special and makes a wonderful setting for a meal.
We ate in the restaurant on all four evenings of our stay, and the food was exceptional every night. There was plenty of choice on the menu, and everything we had was excellent. Breakfast each morning was also very good.
A special mention has to go to the restaurant and bar staff, who were exceptional throughout our stay. The service was consistently friendly, attentive and professional, and they really helped make our visit so enjoyable. The Machrie is very fortunate to have such a great team.
A lovely hotel in a beautiful part of Islay, with excellent food, wonderful views and outstanding staff. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would happily return.
There were just a couple of areas where we felt the experience could have been better. We received a perfectly pleasant and friendly welcome from the lady on reception when we arrived. However, when checking out, we spoke with a different receptionist who was extremely friendly and helpful. We also overheard him sharing useful information about the hotel and the local area with arriving guests that hadn't been shared with us when we checked in. We felt that having this information at the beginning of our stay would have been helpful.
We also found arranging taxis on Islay quite challenging. The hotel provided us with telephone numbers to try, but we felt they could perhaps have been a little more proactive in helping guests arrange transport, particularly given how difficult taxis can be to secure. On one occasion, a member of the reception team could see that I was struggling to find a taxi to get us to a distillery tour, but unfortunately no assistance was offered. This was a little disappointing and felt like a missed opportunity to provide the level of service we experienced elsewhere in the hotel.
It was also disappointing that both hot tubs were out of action during our stay, as we had been looking forward to using them.
These points aside, we had a very enjoyable four nights at The Machrie. The beautiful setting, excellent food and, above all, the outstanding restaurant and bar team were real highlights of our stay.

The staff were amazing. Location stunning. Hot tubs fabulous. Loads for the kids to do and they felt very welcome by the staff. Food was good - don’t miss the lobster!
We had a 2 bedroom cottage and it was lovely - spacious, nicely decorated and well appointed but the house keeping could have been better.

The location was fab ! The hotel blends in beautifully and the landscape around is breathtaking
They gave us 2 rooms apart and our son was in another wing ....very difficult to locate as it was a labyrinth of rooms !
Also we requested them very politely to cancel the last day stay and instead give us complimentary meals as they don't have a refund policy .....but they refused !!! That was a bit rude .....
