Pros
Excellent location. The hotel’s greatest strength is its location, directly across from Copenhagen City Hall. It is within easy walking distance of many of the city’s major attractions, including Tivoli Gardens, the Glyptotek art museum, the City Hall Square, and numerous restaurants, shops, and other sights.
Spacious room. At least the room we stayed in was quite large and offered considerably more space than many typical European hotel rooms.
Cons
Prohibitively expensive for what you get. Copenhagen is an extremely expensive city even more expensive than New York in many respects so I expected hotel prices to be high. However, the Scandic Palace is prohibitively expensive for the quality it provides. I don’t mind paying a premium price when the experience justifies it, but it is difficult to justify these rates for a hotel that feels distinctly dated. The carpeting is worn, the furniture is old-fashioned, and the overall condition of the room simply does not match the price.
Odd bathroom configuration. Our room had a rather unusual setup. The toilet and one sink were in one bathroom, while the shower was in a completely separate room on the other side of the bedroom. The shower room had another sink but no mirror, so it essentially served only as a shower room. Some guests may appreciate this arrangement because two people can use the facilities simultaneously, but I personally found it awkward.
Very disappointing breakfast. This was probably my least favorite part of the stay. The breakfast food was extremely mediocre and essentially identical every single day, with little or no variation. Even worse was the breakfast area itself. It felt cramped and overcrowded, with tables and chairs packed so closely together that we were constantly bumping into other guests while trying to move around. However. The servers were fantastic.
Unpleasant-smelling drinking glasses. One particularly off-putting issue was that every water glass I used at breakfast had a distinct egg-like smell. Anyone who has encountered this knows how unpleasant it is: sometimes the odor of eggs remains on glassware even after washing. This happened repeatedly, with glass after glass. The hotel really needs to address its dishwashing and drying process, whether through a higher-powered dishwasher, hotter washing cycle, steam drying, or another solution. Drinking water from a glass that smells of eggs is a major turn-off.
