The hotel opened in 1847, the rooms are small. But quaint, and furnished exactly as needed. Sadly the elevator was broken which made for climbing stairs, however the staff was helpful and carried our bags for us to and from our room.

Convenient to step off train and leave bags to explore. Also large M&S department store right next door. Easy walk into city.
Arrived to find the lift was out of order and wouldn't be fixed anytime soon as awaiting parts. No contact made beforehand to inform me if this was a problem as my room was on 3rd floor and access was via spiral staircase. As a 70year old with health issues, it would have been appreciated a heads up. Could have changed my booking to when lift was working again. Also no TV working in the hotel as some problem in hotel with connection. Being close to station has drawback. Loud noise of trains coming and going which did stop around midnight but then around 4.00 a.m. the freight trains started truddling through at high speed which was even louder. So no peaceful sleep.
Having said this really helpful friendly staff that did carry my suitcase upstairs, and they were young and fit but still found it a struggle up spiral staircase.
