The Layne is definitely the best budget hotel in SF. It’s super clean and comfortable and the same family has owned and operated it for decades. The location is great as it’s central and just a few blocks from Union Square and BART. I’ve stayed in a lot of different hotels in SF over the years and the Layne is still my favorite.

The owner is extremely nice and helpful, he helped me with whatever I asked him. The staff in general is quite nice. Lastly, the location of this hotel is really good, right in the heart of SF.
The property is a bit dated. It's ok in terms of price-value, but could use an upgrade.
